Looking for the best things to do in Sigiriya? This peaceful town in the heart of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle is surrounded by rice fields, lakes, and ancient history. It’s the perfect base to explore iconic landmarks like Lion Rock, Pidurangala Rock, Polonnaruwa, and the nearby Dambulla Cave Temples.

We loved the calm atmosphere here: slow mornings, beautiful sunsets, delicious food and friendly locals everywhere you go. It’s a place that invites you to slow down and truly take in the beauty around you.
In this guide, I’ll share what to see, how to get around, and insider tips from our visit.

Whether you come for a day trip or spend a few nights, Sigiriya is one of those must-visit places that truly belongs on your Sri Lanka itinerary.

Did you know?

Sigiriya’s famous Lion Rock Fortress was once a royal palace built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century. The entire complex — from the sky gardens to the mirror wall — was designed to resemble a giant lion. Today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited landmarks in Sri Lanka.

Best Things to Do in Sigiriya and nearby

There’s so much more to this area than the famous Lion Rock. From ancient ruins and peaceful lakes to unforgettable sunsets and local life, Sigiriya offers something for everyone. You can easily spend two or three days exploring, or longer if you want to slow down and enjoy the quiet countryside.

1. Climb Sigiriya Lion Rock Fortress (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

This iconic rock fortress is one of Sri Lanka’s most visited landmarks and a true masterpiece of ancient engineering. The climb takes around 45 minutes, and once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with incredible panoramic views over the plains. Along the way, you’ll pass the famous frescoes and the giant lion’s paws that give the site its name.

Entrance: $35 (valid for the Sigiriya Lion Rock Museum too)

Tip: Go early in the morning (it opens at 5 am) to avoid crowds and heat

2. Hike Pidurangala Rock for Sunrise/Sunset Views

If you’re on a budget or want a quieter experience, Pidurangala Rock is a fantastic alternative to Lion Rock. The climb is short but steep, and the view of Sigiriya Fortress at sunrise is absolutely breathtaking.

Entrance: 1,000 LKR (paid at the temple below)

We went for sunset and loved the golden light and calm atmosphere at the top.
Tip: Bring a sarong to cover your knees while you pass the temple at the bottom, and remember to bring a torch for the way down!

3. Visit the Dambulla Cave Temple Complex (Day Trip)

Located about 30 minutes from Sigiriya, the Dambulla Cave Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. Inside the five caves, you’ll find over 150 Buddha statues and stunning wall paintings that date back more than 2,000 years.

Entrance: 2,000 LKR

Good Tips

  • Bring water and go early; it’s a steep climb, but the views and history make it worth it
  • Watch out for playful monkeys along the path; they’re used to visitors and can be cheeky if you’re carrying snacks!
  • Don’t miss visiting the Golden Temple of Dambulla

4. Explore the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa (Day Trip)

Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s second ancient capital, is about 1.5 hours away from Sigiriya and perfect for a full-day trip. The ruins here are remarkably well-preserved, from royal palaces and temples to the beautiful Gal Vihara Buddha statues carved into granite.

Entrance: $30

You can rent a bicycle to explore at your own pace, or hire a tuk-tuk to cover the large area comfortably.
We absolutely loved visiting Polonnaruwa. It was one of our favourite experiences in the Cultural Triangle. Cycling through the quiet ruins surrounded by nature felt like stepping back in time. If you only have time for a day trip from Sigiriya, make it this one!

5. Take a Safari in Minneriya National Park

Just 30 minutes from Sigiriya, Minneriya National Park is one of the top things to do in Sigiriya if you love wildlife. The park is famous for “The Gathering,” when hundreds of elephants come together around the Minneriya reservoir — one of Asia’s largest wild elephant gatherings.

Book a morning or afternoon tour (the 3–5 pm slot is ideal) and keep an eye out for elephants, monkeys, and colourful birds.

Tip: Join a shared jeep safari to reduce costs — your guesthouse can usually help arrange one.

6. Explore Local Villages and Lakes by Tuk-Tuk

Beyond the famous Lion Rock, Sigiriya is surrounded by peaceful rural landscapes — small lakes, rice fields, and palm-fringed roads. Hiring a tuk-tuk for a few hours is a great way to experience local life and see a more authentic side of Sri Lanka.
You’ll pass farmers tending the fields, kids cycling to school, and water buffalo cooling off in the mud.

Tip: Ask your guesthouse to recommend a friendly driver — locals often know hidden viewpoints and quiet lakes tourists miss.

7. Relax and Eat Local Sri Lankan Cuisine in Sigiriya Town

After a day of exploring temples and ancient cities like Polonnaruwa and Dambulla, take time to unwind in Sigiriya’s relaxed cafés and curry houses.
Try traditional rice and curry, kottu roti, or a fresh mango juice while watching the sunset over the paddy fields.

Our favourites were Pradeep Restaurant & Shenadi Restaurant for their home-cooked curries and Rasta Rant for laid-back evening vibes and friendly locals.

If you love authentic Sri Lankan food, this is the perfect place to slow down, chat with locals, and enjoy the warmth that makes travel in Sri Lanka so special.

How to Get to and around Sigiriya

Getting to Sigiriya

Sigiriya sits right in the centre of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, making it easy to reach from most major destinations.

  • From Colombo: 4–5 hours by bus or train to Dambulla, then a 30-minute local bus to Sigiriya
  • From Kandy: About 2 hours by bus or car to Dambulla, then change for Sigiriya
  • From Anuradhapura: Around 2 hours by car or 3 hours by bus (via Dambulla)
  • Private car: The most flexible option. We shared a ride for 7,500 LKR total and travelled in comfort

You can also use the PickMe app (similar to Uber) or ask your guesthouse to arrange a driver.
