How to Get to and around Malang
Getting to Malang
Flight
The fastest way to get to Malang is by flying into Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport (Malang airport), located just 17 kilometres from the city centre. There are direct flights from Jakarta and other major cities in Indonesia. For the best prices, check Skyscanner or Trip.com. It’s a great tool to find affordable flights to kick off your Malang trip.
Train
Taking the train is one of the most scenic and budget-friendly ways to travel across Java. Daily trains run from major hubs like Surabaya and Yogyakarta, making it a convenient option for both locals and travellers.
For our journey, we took the Malioboro Express (Economy Class CA) from Yogyakarta to Malang, which cost IDR 270k/person. The ride took just under 7 hours. At Yogyakarta’s Tugu Station, you can print your boarding pass at a self-service machine and grab some snacks or coffee before boarding.
At the station, scan your passport and ticket to enter, then find your platform. The train makes two stops in Malang:
- Malang Kotalama: We got off here because our hotel was right between this stop and Malang Station
- Malang Station: Stay on until this stop if you want a peek at Jodipan, the famous colourful village of Malang
Tip: Book your train tickets in advance, especially during weekends or holidays. If you’re travelling from Surabaya, try to grab a window seat; the lush East Javanese countryside is a view worth soaking in.
Getting around Malang
E-hailing Services
For longer distances or day trips, Grab and Gojek are your best friends. These ride-hailing apps are widely used in Malang, Java and are both affordable and convenient. You can book a car or motorbike in just a few taps, which is perfect for reaching attractions that are a bit further out.
The apps are user-friendly, give upfront price estimates, and let you avoid the hassle of negotiating fares. It’s a stress-free way to explore Malang travel highlights comfortably.
Scooter
If you prefer more freedom, renting a scooter in Malang is a great option. Daily rentals typically cost IDR 70k–100k, making it an affordable and fun way to get around. This is especially handy if you want to explore spots outside the city centre at your own pace.

The city centre of Malang is compact and very walkable. During our visit, we strolled from one attraction to the next with ease. Many of the top things to do in Malang — from city parks to local cafes and street art — are located within a short walking distance of each other.
Walking also gives you the chance to notice hidden gems, chat with locals, and soak up the everyday charm of this underrated East Javanese city.

1. Visit Jodipan: The Rainbow Village of Malang (Kampung Warna Warni)
One of the most unique and photogenic spots in Malang is Jodipan, also known as the Rainbow Village Malang. What was once a rundown riverside slum is now a colourful, art-filled community with painted houses, vibrant staircases, and creative murals around every corner.
We spent a relaxed afternoon here just wandering around, chatting with locals, and snapping photos. The bright colours and fun street art make this place a dream for both photographers and travellers.
2. Explore Kampung Biru Arema: Malang’s Blue Village
Just across the yellow glass bridge from Jodipan lies Kampung Biru Arema, also known as the Blue Village of Malang. This striking neighbourhood is painted entirely in shades of blue and was created as a tribute to Arema FC, Malang’s beloved football club.
As you wander through the peaceful blue alleyways, you’ll notice murals, painted rooftops, and signs of strong community pride. It’s less busy than Jodipan but just as charming, offering a more local, down-to-earth vibe that gives you a different perspective of the city.
We loved soaking in the calm atmosphere here after the energy of Jodipan. It’s a fun and photogenic stop that adds depth to your Malang travel experience.
3. Visit Tumpak Sewu: East Java’s Most Epic Waterfall
Often called the “Thousand Waterfalls,” Tumpak Sewu is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Indonesia. Just 2–2.5 hours from Malang, this 120-meter-tall cascade is a dream for nature lovers.
You can enjoy the views from above, or if you’re up for it, hike down to the base for an up-close (and wet!) adventure. It’s best done as a day trip from Malang, either by renting a scooter, hiring a driver or joining a trip.

4. Visit Mount Bromo from Malang
Mount Bromo is a must on your Java itinerary, and it’s easy to visit from Malang. Famous for its surreal sunrise views and smoking crater, it’s one of Indonesia’s most iconic volcanoes.
Many people do it as a day trip, starting with a midnight pick-up from Malang and driving 2–2.5 hours to the viewpoint at King Kong Hill or Penanjakan. From there, you’ll catch the magical sunrise over the caldera.
We chose a 3-day tour that also included Tumpak Sewu and Kawah Ijen, and honestly, it was one of the best parts of our whole Indonesia trip.

5. Visit Bukit Kuneer Tea Plantations
Bukit Kuneer is located in Batu, just outside Malang, and offers a peaceful escape into wide, green tea fields. The plantation dates back to the Dutch colonial era and sits high in the cool mountain air. It’s ideal for a relaxing stroll and a breath of fresh air.
You can walk along elevated bridges, enjoy panoramic views, and snap some beautiful photos. Entry fees are affordable:
- IDR 20k for the plantation
- IDR 10k for Kuneer Hill
- IDR 5k for motorbike parking
It’s about a 30-minute walk from the parking area, or you can hop on a motorbike taxi to reach the top. Renting a scooter or hiring a driver is the easiest way to explore the area at your own pace.
6. Visit Coban Rondo Waterfall
Set at 1,135 meters in Pandesari Village, Coban Rondo Waterfall is a beautiful 84-meter cascade wrapped in local legend. According to folklore, it’s named after a grieving princess, hence the name, which means “widow’s waterfall.”
It’s more than just a photo stop. You’ll also find family-friendly activities like ATV rides and a fun labyrinth nearby.
Entrance fee:
- IDR 35k on weekdays
- IDR 40k on weekends (includes all attractions)
To avoid the crowds, try visiting on a weekday. It’s a popular spot among locals, especially on weekends. Again, a motorbike or private driver makes getting here super easy.

Final Thoughts on Malang
Malang is the kind of place that surprises you; a perfect blend of culture, nature, and local charm. While it’s possible to explore the main city highlights in a day, we highly recommend giving yourself more time to discover the surrounding gems.
From colourful villages and waterfalls to tea plantations and volcano views, there are many great things to do in Malang. It’s an ideal base for exploring East Java and pairs perfectly with nearby adventures like Tumpak Sewu, Mount Bromo, and Kawah Ijen.
