Our Experience: 3-Day Organised Bromo Tour
Visiting Mount Bromo was one of the highlights of our 3-day East Java tour. We left before dawn, bundled up against the cold, and bounced through the darkness in a jeep toward the viewpoint. Even in the early hours, the place was buzzing with travellers, all waiting for that golden sunrise.
When the sun rose, the sky lit up in soft shades of orange and pink. Mount Bromo emerged from the clouds, with Mount Semeru smoking in the background. It was a breathtaking scene that made the early wake-up totally worth it.
After sunrise, we drove to the base of Mount Bromo for a short hike to the crater. The trail was easy, though the sulphur smell got stronger as we got closer. Standing at the crater’s edge, surrounded by smoke, felt like stepping onto another planet: raw, wild, and unforgettable.
Day Trip from Malang
Short on time? A Mount Bromo day trip from Malang is a great option. Most tours start around midnight with a 2–2.5 hour drive to sunrise viewpoints like King Kong Hill or Penanjakan Bromo.
After sunrise, you’ll explore the Sea of Sand, hike up to the crater, and stop by Pura Luhur Poten, a Hindu temple at the volcano’s base. Tours usually wrap up by late morning, which is ideal for tight schedules.
Day tours are also available from Probolinggo and Surabaya, with a similar itinerary and travel time.
Day or Multi-Day Tour from Bali
Coming from Bali? Many travel packages include both Mount Bromo and Kawah Ijen in one multi-day tour. It’s perfect for ticking off two East Java highlights.

What to Expect on the Bromo Tour
What’s included in the Tour
Our Mount Bromo sunrise tour was one of the most memorable moments of our East Java itinerary. The day started with a 3:00 AM pick-up in a 4×4 jeep, layered up for the cold ride to King Kong Hill, one of the best viewpoints of Mount Bromo and Mount Semeru.
We stopped at a small café for hot drinks before making the short hike to the viewpoint (4:30 AM). As the sun rose, the sky turned shades of orange and pink, revealing Bromo volcano above the misty Sea of Sand. It was breathtaking, a truly unforgettable moment of our Indonesia trip.
After sunrise, we drove across the Sea of Sand (part of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park), stopping for photos, and passed Pura Luhur Poten temple before hiking to Bromo’s crater. The trail was short and easy, though the sulphur smell grew stronger near the top. Staring into the smoky crater was surreal, a moment of pure awe.
By 9:00 AM, we were back at our hotel for breakfast and a short break before continuing to Kawah Ijen, the next and final stop on our 3-day East Java Itinerary.
Is Mount Bromo Worth Visiting?
100%, yes! The tour was well-organised, and everything from transfers and guides to accommodation and entrance tickets was included. It made the entire experience stress-free and seamless.
However, the tour also felt a little rushed after sunrise, with only about 1.5 hours to enjoy the views, explore the Sea of Sand, and hike the crater. If you’re into photography or just want a slower pace, consider a private Mount Bromo tour for more flexibility.
Tips for Independent or Private Tours
Do you want more freedom? Book a private Bromo jeep tour or travel independently. Stay overnight in Cemoro Lawang, the closest village to Mt Bromo, for an early start. You can get there by train from Malang, Surabaya, or Banyuwangi, followed by a shared minivan to the village. From there, rent a scooter, hire a local driver, or hike to the viewpoints.
Sunrise is the best time to visit Mount Bromo, offering the clearest skies and best lighting. Sunset is another great time, especially for photographers, as the crowds are smaller and the views just as beautiful.
Tip
Are you planning to fly a drone? Avoid launching directly from the crater rim as it’s considered sacred by locals. Instead, head to the far left side of the rim for a discreet take-off, or launch from the bottom near Pura Luhur Poten Temple (not on the temple grounds). We learned this only when a local kindly informed us on the spot.

Our Mount Bromo tour from Cemoro Lawang started at 3:00 AM and finished by 9:00 AM. We arrived the day before to settle in and rest before the early start.

If you’re travelling independently, you’ll have more freedom. Stay overnight, catch both sunrise and sunset, and enjoy the views without rushing. This is perfect for photographers and slow travellers.

The best time to visit Mount Bromo is during the dry season, from April to October, when the skies are clear and conditions are perfect for hiking. July and August are the busiest months, so aim for the shoulder season if you prefer fewer crowds.
Avoid the rainy season (November to March), as it often brings low visibility and slippery trails.
Mount Bromo Tour Costs
Our 3-day Bromo and Ijen tour cost IDR 2.8 million (~USD 186) per person, including transfers, guides, and accommodation. Multi-day tours typically range from USD 150–250.
Day tours start around USD 45, while private options average USD 100+ for a more flexible experience.
For independent travellers, the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park entrance fee is IDR 220k (weekdays) or IDR 320k (weekends). Tickets are available near Café Lava Hostel in Cemoro Lawang.
Where to Eat in Cemoro Lawang
Cemoro Lawang might be a small mountain village, but it has a few cosy spots where you can fuel up before or after your Mount Bromo sunrise tour.
To have dinner, we walked to Warung Edi, just a short stroll from our hostel. We both ordered the mie goreng special for IDR 20k, a simple, satisfying meal after a long day of exploring. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for tasty local food on a budget.
For breakfast, we ate at Café Lava Hostel, where a basic meal was included in our stay. While the food was okay, the mocha stole the show! Made with a proper espresso machine, it was easily one of the best coffees we had during our time in East Java.
Tip
If you’re a coffee lover, the mocha at Café Lava (IDR 30k) is a must-try. You can also check out Kusuma Kitchen, another traveller favorite serving a mix of Indonesian and Western dishes, and a heavenly good mocha!
Where to Stay near Mount Bromo
When planning your visit to Mount Bromo, finding a cosy place to rest is key, especially after an early sunrise start. The village of Cemoro Lawang is the most convenient base, with plenty of guesthouses and hotels catering to travellers.
We stayed at Café Lava Hostel as part of our 3-day Tumpak Sewu, Bromo and Ijen tour. Our chalet-style twin room was simple but comfortable, with hot water, warm duvets, and breakfast included. It was just what we needed on a chilly night at over 2,200 meters above sea level.
There’s a wide range of accommodation options available in Cemoro Lawang, from private rooms starting at just $20 per night to more premium stays. Whether you’re after a social hostel or a quiet mountain retreat, you’ll find something that fits your style and budget.
Practical Tips for Visiting Mount Bromo
