Lake Balaton in Hungary has always meant one thing to me: HAPPINESS

Growing up, summer meant heading to the Hungarian Sea, usually around Siófok on the south shore. I would spend hours in the water, and I was always the last one to come out. Even when it started raining or a storm was approaching, I didn’t want to leave.

Over the years, I returned many times. Since some of my relatives live near the lake, we explored different towns along both the north and south shores. However, my forever favourites will always be Balatonfüred and Tihany. I love the marina strolls, the lake views, the lively promenade, and the wine festivals. The atmosphere is simply unmatched.

As the largest freshwater lake in Central Europe, Lake Balaton is one of Hungary’s most popular tourist destinations and a true local favourite. And it’s not just for summer. From swimming and beaches to wine tasting, hiking, and thermal baths, there’s something to enjoy all year round.

So, are you ready? Let’s explore why visiting Lake Balaton in Hungary is truly worth it.

Balatonfüred

Balatonfüred is one of my personal favourites. I love the marina, the promenade, and the relaxed yet lively atmosphere. The town is known for Tagore Promenade, Wine Weeks, Vaszary Villa, and the historic Anna Ball. With its strong sailing culture and even a famous cardiology hospital, Balatonfüred has long been one of the most elegant towns on Lake Balaton.

Badacsony is a must for wine lovers. Volcanic basalt formations rise dramatically above the lake, while vineyards and wine cellars are tucked into the hillsides. Families have been producing wine here for generations, and during harvest season, this area becomes a favourite for serious wine enthusiasts. The views, cuisine, and relaxed atmosphere make it one of the most scenic parts of Lake Balaton.

Keszthely

Located on the western end of Lake Balaton, Keszthely offers a mix of history and lakeside charm. The highlight here is the beautiful Festetics Palace, along with the city beach, promenade, and even a Ferris wheel. It’s also very close to Hévíz, making it a great base for exploring the area.

Siófok holds many of my childhood memories. The Golden Beach, the taste of real vanilla ice cream, and evening walks to the marina all bring back great moments. Later, Siófok also became known for its nightlife, lively atmosphere, and long beaches. You can even take a boat ride from Balatonfüred to Siófok, which takes around 1- 1.5 hours and offers beautiful views across the lake.

Zamárdi

Zamárdi is a more relaxed alternative to Siófok, known for its long beaches and stunning views across the lake towards Tihany. It’s also home to popular summer festivals and is a great spot for sailing on Lake Balaton, paddleboarding, and lakeside walks.

The town previously hosted the well-known Balaton Sound Festival, and today it’s home to the popular Strand Festival, usually held in August, bringing live music, a lively atmosphere, and visitors from across Hungary and beyond.

Balatonboglár

Balatonboglár is a quieter, family-friendly town with pleasant beaches and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s also known for the Janus Xantos Lookout (Sphere Lookout or Gömbkilátó), which offers panoramic views over Lake Balaton and the surrounding area.
